3-Hr Backpacking and Wilderness Survival Course

Price $57 per person.  Participants must be at least 18 years old. Conducted at Canaan Valley Resort State Park WV and Cacapon State Park WV. Must register and pay online in advance.  

Note:  This course is the prerequisite for those wanting to participate in the Overnight Wilderness Survival Trek at Cacapon Resort State Park WV on April 13 or October 12. 

Course focus is on getting started with backpacking and understanding survival skills needed to stay alive when lost in America’s back country, wilderness areas, national and state parks, and forests.  Includes professional instruction and demonstration on backpacking gear and the 10 essential wilderness skills: survival planning, fire starting, sheltering, survival kits, rescue signaling, foraging, navigation, snares and traps, finding water, and first aid.  Involves both classroom instruction and field exercises.

What to Bring:  synthetic quick-dry/wicking clothes, hiking shoes/boots (no sandals), bottled water, and rain gear.     

What's Provided:  Professional instruction and use of survival tools, gear and supplies.

Cacapon Overnight Wilderness Survival Trek

$143 per person    Participants must be at least 18 years old. Must register and pay online in advance.

Participants master their individual skills and will also learn to work with others in teams to accomplish challenging survival tasks in Cacapon’s back country.

 Note: To participate in this Trek you must have attended the 3-Hr Wilderness Survival Course at Cacapon State Park.

 This Trek involves moderate to difficult hiking, backpacking, survival camping and team work as we develop our capabilities based on the 10 essential wilderness survival skills:  survival planning, fire starting, sheltering, survival kits, rescue signaling, foraging, navigation, snares and traps, finding water, and first aid.  These same skills are also vitally important for emergencies at home (especially in winter) and when traveling the back roads where there is always the danger of becoming stranded.

This program is built around a series of challenging field exercises that will focus on solutions in key survival skill areas.  Each participant will have the opportunity to use their own backpack, equipment and hiking gear along with the survival equipment and materials provided.

What to Bring:  synthetic quick-dry/wicking clothes, hiking shoes/boots (no sandals), personal backpack, personal hiking gear, personal hygiene items, and rain gear. 

What’s Provided:  Professional instruction, bottled water, student survival guide, use of survival materials, supplies, tools and gear.

4-Hour Wilderness Survival Skills Endurance Challenge

Dates: TBD during July or August at CAnaan Valley Resort State Park WV

Participants must be at least 18 years old. Advance register and pay online will be required.  

Great outdoor endurance challenge for those who want a more fast-paced program of wilderness skills training!  We’ll run, collect food, navigate, (surprise activity), run more, navigate obstacles, build fire, collect and purify water, cook, erect raised bed shelters, and do some primitive target shooting, all before time runs out.  

What to Bring:  synthetic quick-dry/wicking clothes, hiking shoes/boots (no sandals), bottled water, and rain gear.     

What's Provided:  Professional instruction and use of survival tools, gear and supplies.
